Best Things to Do in Maui with Kids
Best for: First-time Maui trips with kids
Time needed: 3–7 days
Worth it? Absolutely
Maui is one of the most well-rounded islands we’ve visited as a family.
You can pack a lot into a trip here—but what makes it special is that you don’t have to. There’s a balance between adventure and margin that’s hard to find in other places.
On this trip, we had a full group—including kids and grandma—and Maui handled that mix really well.
Here’s how we’d approach it if you’re planning a family trip.
Start with the Big Experiences
If it’s your first time on Maui, there are a few anchor experiences that really shape the trip.
Haleakalā National Park – watching the sunrise above the clouds is one of the most unique things you can do on the island
Road to Hana – an incredible drive, but go in with the right expectations (it’s more about the experience than checking off stops)
Whale Watching – if you’re there in season, this is one of the most memorable things you can do
These are the experiences that give your trip some structure.
Best Beaches for Families
Maui has no shortage of beaches, but a few stood out as especially good for families.
Kapalua Bay – calm water, great snorkeling, and very approachable
Napili Bay – one of the best places we found to see sea turtles up close
Kapalua Coastal Trail – not just a beach, but a way to connect multiple spots into one experience
We ended up spending more time in this area than anywhere else.
Easy Wins (Low Effort, High Value)
These are the kinds of stops that don’t take much time but add a lot to the trip.
Nakalele Blowhole – more rugged and adventurous than most stops
Hookipa Beach Park – quick pull-off with great views of surfers and sea turtles
They’re easy to fit into your day without overplanning.
Food Stops That Are Actually Worth It
We hit a mix of quick stops and sit-down spots. These were the ones that stood out.
Ululani’s Shave Ice – worth the line (go with the Haleakalā)
Tin Roof – quick, local, and perfect near the airport
Maui Brewing Company – great dinner spot with live music and a strong atmosphere
Old Lahaina Luau – a full cultural experience, not just a show
These are the places we’d go back to.
How to Think About Your Maui Trip
One of the biggest takeaways from our trip was how easy it is to overdo Maui.
You could try to pack every day full—but it actually gets better when you don’t.
plan around 1–2 main activities per day
leave space for beach time
be open to stopping when something catches your attention
Some of our best moments came from things we didn’t plan in advance.
Final Thoughts
Maui gives you a mix of:
adventure
natural beauty
culture
and margin
For families, that combination is hard to beat.
