Kapalua Coastal Trail: One of Maui’s Best Scenic Walks

April 09, 20262 min read

Best for: Scenic walking + connecting beaches
Time needed: 1–2 hours (longer if you linger)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Worth it? Definitely

The Kapalua Coastal Trail ended up being one of the most enjoyable and dynamic parts of our time in Maui.

We didn’t just treat it like a walk—we used it to connect beach stops and turn a normal beach day into something more memorable.

How We Did It

We started near:

Kapalua Bay Beach

From there, we made our way toward Fleming Beach.

The full stretch is about 1.7 miles and includes a mix of paved paths and more natural trail sections.

We actually split things up a bit. The boys and I walked the trail, while Brenda and her mom drove ahead with the beach gear.

It ended up being the perfect setup—everyone got what they wanted out of it.

What the Trail is Like

The trail starts off feeling more polished.

  • paved walkways

  • palm trees lining the path

  • ocean views the entire way

  • resort-style surroundings

But as you continue, it shifts.

  • dirt and gravel sections

  • open grassland areas

  • a more rugged, natural coastal feel

That contrast is what makes it interesting—you’re not just walking the same environment the whole time.

What We Noticed Along the Way

There were a few things that stood out as we moved along the trail.

  • signs explaining the nearby coral reefs (which helps explain why snorkeling is so good in this area)

  • roped-off sections for nesting seabirds

  • small holes in the ground that the boys were convinced had birds living in them

  • warning signs about unstable cliffs in certain areas

It felt like there was always something new to notice.

A Random but Fun Moment

At one point, we passed a guy wearing an Ohio University shirt.

I threw out an “O-H…”

…and both he and his wife fired back an enthusiastic “I-O.”

Didn’t expect that in Maui.

Ending at Fleming Beach

The trail eventually leads down toward Fleming Beach, which has a completely different feel than Kapalua Bay.

  • bigger waves

  • more energy

  • great for boogie boarding

Right there at the bottom is Burger Shack overlooking the water, which makes for a great stopping point.

Parking Tip

Parking in this area can be a bit of a challenge.

  • paid parking is around $30

  • there’s a small free lot, but it fills up early

If you want a free spot, aim to get there before 10am.

Final Take

This is more than just a walk—it’s a full experience.

If you’re deciding between “just going to the beach” or doing something that feels a little more memorable, this is the move.
