Napili Bay Beach: Sea Turtles Up Close on Maui
Best for: Sea turtles + relaxed beach
Time needed: 1–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Worth it? Yes
Napili Bay Beach was one of those places we didn’t overplan—and it ended up being one of the highlights of our time on Maui.
We originally walked down just to take a quick look…
…and within minutes, we had already seen multiple sea turtles in the water.
That was enough to stay.
What It’s Like
The bay itself has a really balanced feel to it—clean, open, and easy to settle into.
dark tan sand that’s easy to walk on
water that shifts from deep blue to bright aqua depending on the light
a rocky section along the edge where most of the activity happens
That rocky area is where we ended up spending most of our time.
The Turtles
This is where Napili Bay really stands out.
At one point, a massive turtle came within just a couple feet of us. Its shell looked close to four feet wide, and its head was bigger than you expect when you see them up close.
Watching them move through the waves near the rocks—surfacing, dipping back under, and navigating the current—was one of those moments that sticks with you.
It didn’t feel rushed or crowded. It just felt natural.
Parking + Setup
The setup here is pretty straightforward.
some free parking on nearby streets
medium-sized hotels surrounding the bay
a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere
It’s not overly commercialized, which helps it keep that laid-back feel.
Final Take
If you want a beach where you have a very real chance of seeing sea turtles up close, this is one of the best options on Maui.
It’s easy, it’s approachable, and it doesn’t feel forced.
