Laupāhoehoe Point: Beauty, Rocks, and a Sobering Piece of Big Island History
Laupāhoehoe Point was one of the more memorable stops of our trip because it held two very different things at once: beauty and grief.
The drive down is tight in places, and on our way out we literally had a rock fall during the drive, which tells you something about how rugged the area can feel. Once you get down there, though, the setting is really beautiful. It is rocky, dramatic, and very much in line with the rugged beauty you see in this part of the island.
What changes the feel of this stop is the history. This was the site of a terrible tsunami tragedy where a school full of children and others lost their lives. That made the stop feel much more somber than a typical scenic pull-off.
That combination is what makes it stay with you. It is beautiful, but it also reminds you that beautiful places can hold heartbreaking stories.
Final Take
For families with older kids especially, this can be a meaningful stop because it opens the door to real conversation about history, loss, and remembrance.
Pair this with Rainbow Falls and Waipiʻo Valley Lookout. For the broader trip, see our Big Island guide.
