North Shore Oahu: Beaches, Surf, and What It’s Really Like
North Shore Oahu: Beaches, Surf, and What It’s Really Like
Best for: Scenic drive + beach hopping
Time needed: Half to full day
Difficulty: Easy
Worth it? Yes
The North Shore of Oahu feels completely different from Waikiki.
It’s more spread out, more laid back, and centered around the ocean.
If Waikiki feels like a city with a beach, the North Shore feels like a string of beaches connected by one road.
The Drive
We drove clockwise along Kamehameha Highway, keeping the ocean on our left the entire time.
Compared to something like:
this drive is much easier.
No tight turns or constant stress—just a steady coastal route with places to stop along the way.
Key Stops Along the North Shore
Each beach has a slightly different feel. Here are a few that stood out to us:
Sunset Beach Park – bigger waves, strong surf energy, and a more rugged feel
ʻEhukai Beach (Pipeline) – one of the most famous surf spots in the world
Turtle Bay – calmer, more polished, and great for relaxing
Each stop is close enough that you can hit multiple in one trip.
What Stands Out
The North Shore isn’t about one single destination.
It’s about the variety along the drive.
different wave conditions at each beach
a mix of rugged and resort-style spots
constant ocean views the entire way
You’re not rushing from one place to the next—you’re just moving along the coast.
Final Take
The North Shore is best experienced without overplanning.
Pick a direction, take your time, and stop where it makes sense.
That’s where it shines.
