1-Day Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park Itinerary (With Kids)

April 03, 20261 min read

If you only have one day at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, this is the route I’d recommend—especially with kids.

Start by reading our full Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park guide so you know what to expect with closures, parking, and visitor center logistics.

Stop 1: Temporary Visitor Center at Kīlauea Military Camp

Start here to get your bearings. This is where you can:

  • grab Junior Ranger booklets

  • get Passport stamps

  • use restrooms

  • pick up a gift or small souvenir

Stop 2: Volcano House

This is a good early stop for views over the crater and an easy food option. If you have kids, the big windows and the steam rising from the crater give them something visual right away.

Stop 3: Nāhuku Lava Tube

This is one of the most unique stops in the park. Bring a headlamp or flashlight. Parking can be tight, so be ready to keep moving if the lot is full.

Stop 4: Chain of Craters Road

The drive itself is part of the experience. This is where you begin to feel how dramatically the landscape changes.

Stop 5: Puʻuloa Petroglyphs

This is a worthwhile stop if your crew can handle a little uneven footing. The payoff at the end is strong, especially if you appreciate history.

Stop 6: Hōlei Sea Arch

This is a great final stop because it opens up into sweeping shoreline views and gives the day a strong finish.

Final Thought

This is one of the few parks where the drive matters, the stops matter, and the overall experience matters. Don’t rush it. And when you’re done, head back to our full Big Island guide for the rest of the island.
